Remembering Fluffy

Today is Fluffy’s birthday, he would have been 19. You were so close buddy. I wanted to remember you on this day and try to say goodbye my first cat.

I say ‘first’ cat because you became my cat by way of marriage. I met you in 2016 when I started dating Amanda and I understood it was a package deal. You were here first, so I had to make sure my allergies to cats never presented an issue and somehow they didn’t. You were standoffish at first, but quickly you warmed up. Eventually you found the time to play with your cat toys with me. Eventually, you would become the first to move to the new house in 2017 as we became a family.

Jump forward to 2018 and I started a new job, this time working from home. Now you had someone to keep to company all day long, so you became my desk buddy. You would hang out with me during the day, mostly calm but occasionally would swat my headphones cable or bite my sticky notes on my monitor. I eventually made a decoy set of stickies that you could bite so mine would stay unharmed. I will never forget the time you forced your way into the back part of the basement during a meeting I was on and then the power went out. I was certain you had somehow chewed on the power cables and fried yourself, but it was just the storm at that time of course.

We did this for a while, survived covid when everyone was at home. Deebo came along to crash your only cat party in 2021, but you made it work. You did not like him, but you would tolerate him, at least sometimes. We made another move later this year to your final house. You really were a champ at adapting to changes. You never complained about it, just found your food and your litterboxes and settled in. You truly were a cool cat.

As the years went on, you hanging out at the desk started to wane as you were better suited with hanging out on your own, but always would make your presence known. I will always fondly remember the time when you started limping around the house and I was so worried about you that I took you to the vet. They looked over you and said it was probably a cut on your paw, but would eventually talk me into x-rays and would find nothing wrong with you other than some irritation to your paw. I only wanted to make sure you were in the best health possible.

In 2023, we started to see that your left eye was not looking great. I will always remember taking you to the vet and them telling me that the glaucoma we had been fighting probably had taken your sight and the eye needed to be removed. It was a difficult choice to make, but for your well-being we proceeded with the eye removal. One of the biggest reliefs in my life was when the vet called after your surgery to let us know that you had made it through. This year 2023 brought us many challenges, but I was happy to have a pirate cat all things considered.

The years rolled on and you adapted and started to slow down. We knew that your years were coming to a close, but every now and then you showed that true cat in you, rolling on toys with catnip. You were a champ and did not complain ever, even as our cat family grew adding in Marshmallow in 2023 and a kitten Marty in 2024. You did become more vocal in your old age and would let us know when you wanted some treats though. You certainly gave us a scare in mid 2025 and we thought that you were ready. But a week later you were bouncing back like nothing had ever happened!

You were nearing 19 years old and you seemed to be going strong. We tried some new meds and your energy seemed just as excellent as before. But then near Easter weekend 2026, your poor body decided it was time. Your mind was still agile and you wanted to do all the things that you were used to, but your body was not able to follow through. Now we knew it was time to say goodbye and we knew that you were ready too. You had given everything you could to us even though we weren’t ready to say goodbye, we knew it was time to let you rest.

Thank you Fluffy for allowing me to spend the ten years I had with you, and the nearly nineteen that you gave Amanda and Jacob. We will always cherish those memories we made together and we are sad that we cannot make more with you. We love you forever and will miss you dearly.

RIP Fluffy May 2, 2007 – April 7, 2026.

Mackinac Island Day 3

Friday July 18, 2025 was our last full day on the Island and was our busiest. We started it with a breakfast at The Pink Pony.

After breakfast, Amanda and I took a bike tour around the island. The last time I was in Mackinac Island, our bike tire got a flat and our trip ended. This time we were successful and made it around. It was a beautiful day.

Next up, we got some food. I stopped and got some pizza and then we were off to Fort Mackinac. This fort was built by the British during the Revolutionary War, so it was a cool bit of history to explore.

Our last stop was taking a carriage ride up to the Grand Hotel. It was an impressive hotel with a great view. They have a huge porch with a ton of rocking chairs.

To wrap up the trip, we ate at Yankee Rebel Tavern. And a final stroll through downtown.

Overall, it was a great trip. We packed a lot into a few days and it was a nice break from the summer heat. The island was nice and cool compared to the 90s back at home.

Mackinac Island Day 2

We started the day off with some breakfast at the restaurant called Seabiscuit Cafe. It was pretty good. Then we went off on a Mackinac Island Carriage Tour and got to ride in a carriage pulled by some horses. The horses were the Belgian Draft Horse and they were huge. This tour took us to Surrey Hills Museum, Arch Rock in the State Park, and a final stop at Fort Mackinac. This was an enjoyable tour and I highly recommend it if you visit Mackinac Island.

After the tour, we walked around the town for a bit and then just rested a bit before going to dinner. For dinner we went to Mary’s Bistro Draught House and I had some pizza which was great.

Mackinac Island Day 1

On July 16, 2025 we begun our trip to Mackinac Island for a few days. The trip started out around 8AM and generally went well. We did hit a bit of heavy rain and were forced to stop for a bit, but we were soon on our way again.

We did stop at Cracker Barrel just outside of Flint, MI and it was a bit of a mess. The service was slow and the food was not much to talk about. From there we got some gas and headed out again. I think we only needed to make one last stop before we found the ferry for the trip across.

The ferry that took us across was from Shepler’s Ferry and was called Captain Shepler. The ride across was not too long and was smooth. We arrived on the island probably around 5PM. We had our bags taken to our hotel called the Bicycle Inn and got quickly checked in.

We had dinner at the Great Turtle Brewery and Distillery and it was really good. After dinner we also had some ice cream at one of the Ryba’s Fudge shops and also walked around a bit.

Daylight Saving Time is here again

It is that time of year again, when we move back into Daylight Saving Time in most of America. There are a few places that don’t, but most of us do. And I am glad it is back. I visited this topic a few years ago in this blog post It is time to adopt year-round DST.

In this post, I put together some graphs to illustration how DST moved useful light later in the day and benefits us in the summer especially when the sun would be wasted early in the morning. We move back to Standard Time around the winter and that does give us some extra light in the morning for a few weeks, but it is short lived. This precious bit of sunlight would benefit us to stay in the evening.

I am already appreciating the change with a sunset of around 7:30PM and it will continue to increase for the next three months. The days already seem longer and more enjoyable.

This is why I think we should end the practice and keep year-round DST. No more clock changing! Maybe one day this will happen and I won’t have to revisit the topic. See you next year, probably.

Styrofoam Recycling December 30, 2021

The City of Hilliard will be running a Styrofoam recycling event on December 30th, 2021 from 10AM – 12PM. The address for this event is 3800 Municipal Way. The one note for the event is that packing peanuts are not accepted. This is a great opportunity to get rid of any Styrofoam collected from recent Christmas gifts.

Northeast Ohio Waterfall Tour October 2021

Over the weekend, we did a waterfall tour and a went on a train ride on the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad. It was a great time with family and even though there was a bit of rain it was enjoyable. I recommend that anyone else interested in these waterfalls use the resources available from Northeast Ohio Family Fun where we found all of the places to visit. At each of the waterfalls, we saw license plates from all around the area, so it was nice to see people coming to Ohio to see our natural resources.

The Digging Has Begun

View of the footings and excavated hole

Yesterday our home building adventure finally started. After many months of waiting after signing the contract and making our design choices, the first step of many in the home building process started. We got our hole dug and the footings were poured. This was an exciting time for us and we are glad to be on our way. It will be interesting to watch it go from a flat lot of dirt into our home of our dreams. I will try to document as much of the process as I can. This should be a fun time and also a stressful time as we continue to prepare to sell our current place. Let the journey begin!
